Liverpool are by far England's most successful team in European history, winning the Champions League six times in their decorated history. Their first appearance in the competition came in the 1964-65 season in which the made the semi finals, losing 4-3 on aggregate to eventual champions, Inter Milan. After a long wait and lots of early exits, Liverpool got their hands on the trophy in 1977, beating German side, Borussia Monchengladbach, 3-1 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Reds would then retain their title, winning 1-0 against Club Brugge in the final in Wembley. The Reds failed to make it three in a row after losing in the first round against fellow English side and eventual champions, Nottingham Forest. Liverpool then got their hands on the trophy again after defeating Real Madrid 1-0 in a Parisian final. After consecutive quarter final defeats, Liverpool made the final in Rome against Italian side, Roma. They drew 1-1 in normal time before Liverpool overcame the Italians on penalties 4-2. Liverpool made the final again in 1985, however the lost this time against Juventus 1-0 in a match known as the "Heysel Disaster" due to an outbreak in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. The 1984-85 season would be Liverpool's last in the Champions League for another 16 years. They managed to qualify for the 2001-02 season as Europa League winners. In the 2004-05 season, Liverpool made the final against AC Milan and after going 3-0 down at half-time, they miraculously managed to produce one of the greatest Champions League comebacks of all time coming back to draw 3-3 before winning on penalties to win their fifth Champions League title and their first in 21 years. They made the final in 2007 against AC Milan. This time, the Italian side were the victorious side winning 2-1 in the final in Athens. In 2018, after a long 11 year wait, Liverpool made the final again in Kyiv, facing the record-champions, Real Madrid. However, it wasn't Liverpool's night in Ukraine as the Reds lost 3-1. One year later, Liverpool made the final for the second time in a row, facing fellow English side, Tottenham Hotspurs in the final in Madrid. This time, Liverpool were victorious winning 2-0 and it was Liverpool's sixth title over all. Liverpool managed to make another final in 2022, meeting Real Madrid in Paris for the second time. Real were the victorious side, winning 1-0. After a Round of 16 defeat to Real Madrid in the 2022-23 season, Liverpool finished 5th in the Premier League, meaning they have qualified for the Europa League, which is where the currently play.
