Borussia Dortmund are one of three German teams to have won the Champions League (Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV), and were the last German team who won the Champions League as of the 20th century. Dortmund's first appearance in the Champions League cam in 1956, in the tournament's second edition, where they were eliminated in the first round, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Manchester United. In 1997, Borussia Dortmund against all the odds, miraculously managed to win their first Champions League title, defeating Juventus 3-1 in the final in Munich. However, the most memorable campaign came in the 2012-13 season. Borussia Dortmund were drawn into the alleged group of death, containing Manchester City, Ajax and Real Madrid. However, due to the brilliant mind of Jurgen Klopp, Dortmund managed to top the group without a single defeat. Then, they overcame Shaktar Donetsk and Malaga in the Round of 16 and Quarter Finals, before stunning Real Madrid winning 4-3 on aggregate. They faced bitter rivals Bayern Munich, which was the first all-German final in Champions League history. However, Bayern were the better team in London, winning 2-1. Since then, the best Dortmund could do in the Champions League was make the quarter finals three times. They are currently competing in the 2023-24 Champions League, topping a group containing, Paris Saint Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle United.
